A simple effort to make easy environmental changes in our life

I remember life before water bottles. We drank water! We drank water in our own containers not throwing them away when we were done. What a concept. I'm hoping we can do that again. Find a container that suits you that you can throw in the dishwasher or better yet wash by hand and take it with you to all the places that you need water. If one in twenty gym goers would bring water from home in their own container, it would save 29 million pounds of plastic a year!! We have to remember our ipod and keys when we leave the house. Let's put water container on that list.

March 2, 2008 New Green Network

The Discovery channel is debuting their newest channel on June 4 called Planet Green. This will be a 24 hours a day network. I was sick in bed all day yesterday and managed to watch three shows that are already being viewed on the Home Discovery Channel. They all have value.
One was the Sarah Snow show. Her show is about balance in our health and home. She has great information about how to incorporate eco friendly foods and materials into our lifestyle to give us an overall healthy, clean balance to our lives. She is easy to watch and has good information.
Greenovate is a show where they go into homes, inform the people of what materials and functions in the home that are environmentally harmful to the earth as well as the inhabitants. They renovate to improve the conditions. This gives us lots of new information to check into our memory bank when it is time to replace systems, flooring, wall surfaces, furnishings, appliances etc. in our homes.
Wasted is one of those shows where a team barges into a home and takes over making the inhabitants feel like schmucks and tells them better ways to live. BUT...........in my opinion, this one has value. They go through all the ins and outs of the household. What they are spending their money on, what activities they are participating in, what they are consuming etc. The "team" devises a plan to improve their "footprint" on the earth and then comes back later to see how they did. (The people who were on yesterday lived on an acre or less but the way they were living indicated they were taking up the full space of 150 acres!!) Aren't we piggy people! They were able to decrease it by some 40% by implementing some changes. Even though I dont care for shows like that necessarily, I learned alot and felt it had great value.
i'm sure the netowork will not only have these three shows but many more to teach us great things. Enjoy!!

MY TRIP TO THE GROCERY STORE

Did you know shampoo as we know it today was actually invented in the 1930's? Shampoos prior to that were very similar to soap. Had the same ingredients. Although people felt that the soap components were harsh on their hair, it cleaned their hair nonetheless. But in the 1930's, shampoos were reinvented using chemicals and synthetics resulting in the wonderful, lathering, smell-good stuff that we depend on today. As we wash our hair with this lovely stuff that smells so good, we are ingesting the chemicals and synthetics through our scalp, skin, mouth and nose. There are shampoos on the shelves now in natural food stores and in many mainstream stores that use strictly natural ingredients. So we are getting the smell-good (which I think is what most of us care about) through REAL botanicals instead of manufactured synthetics. They work beautifully. All hygienic materials we use as well as cosmetics, were used with natural ingredients for centuries with good results until the "synthetic revolution" came along and convinced us that if it didn't include all the new ingredients that were produced in a lab, then they didn't work. Not true. Please shop around. Start ingesting natural ingredients!!
